Lines and Wrinkles

Ageing skin droops and develops wrinkles, lines and furrows. The severity of these changes in an individual depends on the genetic tendency, skin type and exposure to environmental factors. To act against wrinkles, fine lines and sagging skin, we must first understand the processes that cause the skin to age. Poor circulation and lymph drainage result in a loss of structural integrity, weakened fragile capillaries, decreased skin density, a decline in collagen production causing the dermal structures to deteriorate and the skin to sag.

Wrinkles are the lines and creases that form in your skin. Some wrinkles can become deep crevices or furrows and may be especially noticeable around your eyes, mouth and neck. The Glogau classification system was developed to objectively measure the severity of ageing and especially wrinkles:

  • Mild: Few wrinkles, requires little or no make-up for coverage
  • Moderate: Early wrinkling, sallow complexion, requires little makeup
  • Advanced: Persistent wrinkling, skin discolouration with broken blood vessels and actinic keratoses, often wears make-up
  • Severe: Severe wrinkling and furrows, actinic keratoses, often wears make-up but it may not hide the ageing changes

Fine lines and wrinkles are caused by a combination of factors, some you can control, others you can't. There is often a degree of asymmetry to the lines, as people tend to smile or frown more on one side than the other, or consistently sleep on the right or the left cheek. The main causes are:

  • Ageing
  • UV exposure
  • Smoking
  • Repeated facial expressions
  • Dehydration

We address fine lines and wrinkles by removing old tissue and working to strengthen the dermal structures which need to work in synergy in order to create healthy skin.
