Enlarged and Open Pores

We all want smooth skin, unfortunately, enlarged and open pores often stand in the way of having that. Pores are essential to your skin's health by providing oil to keep skin soft and hydrated. Open pores typically develop as a result of blocked pores, insufficient free water levels within the skin and an accumulation of dead cell material which cement on the top of the skin and clump up inside the hair follicle. This is characterised by an open pore appearance. In addition, those with large pores can be more prone to breakouts.

Pores are more prominent when they are dilated, infected, or clogged, making them appear larger than they really are. They tend to be found on the oily or ageing skin which can get clogged with debris and oils, like sebum, that should flow out of pores.

There are a number of factors that will cause large pores, but of the many, the three main factors are:

  • Ageing: As we age we will naturally lose the elasticity in the surrounding skin that supports the pores, causing pores to appear bigger than they actually are.
  • Genetics: Men are more likely to have larger pores compared to women from their genetic makeup and increased oil production. Individuals who have skin that is naturally thick and oily tend to have larger pores.
  • Oily skin: It all begins when your oil glands make too much oil. This excess oil mixes with other substances (such as dead skin) in the pore, causing a clog. Not surprisingly, this clog makes it difficult for the oil to flow freely, which causes the pore itself to enlarge.

While it is not possible to permanently "shrink" enlarged and open pores, there are ways to help minimise the appearance of enlarged, open pores and smooth out your complexion. DMK pore reduction treatments aim to refine pores by cleaning them out, gently exfoliating the dead cell build-up, increasing free water levels and minimising their appearance whilst supplying the skin with essential minerals and vitamins.
