Reactive and Sensitive Skin

We are led to believe that skin is fragile and sensitive. But skin is a strong organ designed to protect us, it has an amazing ability to regenerate itself. Skin is not sensitive; it is merely reactive when the internal processes are out of balance. An important thing about sensitivity is that it is not caused by an allergic reaction where the skin becomes reactive suddenly. Individuals with sensitive skin will experience a slow breakout that will build over time. A big misconception regarding sensitivities is when acne-prone skin is confused with reactive skin. These are two completely different things as sensitive means "easily irritated or inflamed". Acne is not caused by an irritant reaction.

There are varying degrees of sensitivity and at the end of the day, everyone's skin becomes sensitive at a certain threshold. The following are the signs that you may have reactive and sensitive skin:

  • Thinner texture, translucent appearance.
  • Dehydration on the cheek and forehead area.
  • Excessive dryness, uneven texture and rough patches.
  • Tightness after washing, and stinging on product application – or even simply when rinsing with water.
  • Broken capillaries across cheeks and nose.
  • Erythema (redness) on cheeks, décolleté and neck, or all over.
  • “Hot spots”, especially on the décolleté, neck and cheeks.
  • Blushing and itching, burning sensations
  • Small, rash-like bumps or breakouts

Trans Epidermal Water Loss (TEWL) is one of the main causes of skin becoming reactive. Water is essential for healthy skin. Skin with good free water levels is soft and supple, reflects a healthy glow and ages less quickly.

Most treatments for sensitive skin attempt to calm the skin and reduce the redness. Our treatments rebalance the skin using barrier repair therapy to increase free water levels, as well as calming and soothing the skin. When the skin is brought back into homoeostasis, it ceases to be reactive and sensitive.
